Can't set clip if a clone and its original are to be clipped

Bug Description

I have a series of objects in the Jul 24 2008 build of 0.46+devel. I was trying to set a clip path for them. I created the path as a rectangle, moved it to the bottom to position, and then back to the top. Finally, I selected everything and clicked on Objects/Clip/Set.

Nothing happened. There was no error in the statusbar. It turns on my first try there were two groups that already had clippaths, but releasing them didn't help. I even tried to recreate my rectangle. I tried turning the rect into a path and stroking it to a path. Neither worked.

Same file causes the same problem in 0.46.

New Information: This is a workaround. Don't select all the objects. Just the ones that stick out past the clip rect. (Works in my nightly install anyway.) I think Inkscape just can't handle the sheer number of objects and fails to complain. So that is two bugs. One is the error itself. The other is not catching the error.

Confirmed on Windows Vista, Inkscape build 21287.

Another workaround: group all your objects (except the clip path) before setting the clip.

Selecting (via 'Find…' dialog) all texts and clones causes the clipping with the rectangle on top to fail - clipping however works when selecting all paths&texts or all paths&clones (tested with Inkscape 0.47+devel r9368 on OS X 10.5.8).

-> Clipping a cloned object (text or path) and its clone with a third object fails - see attached minimal test case.
