Modify object grid snap behavior

Bug Description

The ability to modify how an object snaps to the grid
would be useful. For example, using an attribute
indicate an origin point which is the only point an
object uses when snapping to the grid. Currently, the
same behavior is achieved by grouping the object with
an unstroked, unfilled box larger than the object. This
feature would be especially useful for people using
inkscape to create schematic diagrams.

Yes, I agree, would be very useful for schematics.

One limitation of the invisible box approach is that if the
grid spacing is changed, the alignment is broken.

You could use the rotation center for that in recent builds. You can move the rotation center anywhere you like, and snap to/from it. But if you want to rotate around another point, then you'd have to move that center again.

When using the selector tool to move around an object, you can hold the ALT key to constrain the translations to multiples of the grid pitch. So once you have aligned an object to the grid the way you want it to, this allows you to keep it aligned to that grid while moving it around.
