A working solution with the current version of Inkscape (0.92) is to inactivate the complex part of the drawing by:
1. putting it on a separate layer. 2. locking the layer. 3. working with text in another, separate layer
This way, I could edit misbehaving SVG files (mostly generated by R, ggplot2 ggsave) in Inkscape.
