Late last year, Canonical performed usability testing of Ubuntu 11.10. The results still have not been published, but they were discussed at UDS on November 3rd. <http://
The test did not cover indicator menus in any great detail. However, one notable result reported was that, as predicted, people didn't understand why webcams and other hardware devices were in the same menu as turning off the computer.
The most elegant way to fix this is to remove the hardware devices section from the session menu. We can improve people's access to hardware devices in more direct ways: for example, implementing the printing status menu <https:/
