Bug Description

I use Pidgin instead of Empathy, but even when I run Pidgin there still is a "set up chat" button in the Messaging Menu (can't say it is the original text, I use Russian locale). What most users expect is that when they use some other IM or e-mail client it should substitute empathy or evolution in the Messaging Menu

Yes. At the very least, we should have access to some settings for the indicator applet. I would disable the "Broadcast" option since I would never use it and the Chat one since Pidgin is already in that menu.

It's not the way I see it. The idea is:
Before Pidgin:
[V]
- Set up chat
- Set up e-mail
- Set up broadcast

Pidgin installed:
[V]
- Set up chat (Pidgin)
- Set up chat (Empathy)
- Set up e-mail
- Set up broadcast

Pidgin installed and configured:
[V]
- Chat
- Set up e-mail
- Set up broadcast

Added Thunderbird:
[V]
- Chat
- Set up e-mail (Thunderbird)
- Set up e-mail (Evolution)
- Set up broadcast

Configured Thunderbird:
[V]
- Chat
- E-mail [Thunderbird shortcut]
- Set up broadcast

Configured Empathy (or any other app)

[V]
- Chat (Empathy)
- Chat (Pidgin)
- E-mail
- Set up broadcast

So you have the choice and don't have that annoying Set up chat thingy when your chat client (Pidgin) is set up already

Why not just rename them as below and be done with it:

"Set up Chat" -> "Set up Empathy"
"Set up Mail" -> "Set up Evolution"
"Set up Broadcast Account" -> "Set up Gwibber"

If they are not generic, do not give them generic names.

Starting from Quantal, the messaging menu will not have default entries anymore, only applications that are configured to use the menu will show up [1].
