Bug Description

When you use File - Open and the Nautilus file dialog appears and you paste a URL into the location (e.g. to Open an image from the web in GIMP or a HTML page in gEdit or or or) NOTHING happens. On Windows a HTTP connection is opened and the resource retrieved. Really annoying.

Hi Stephan,

Can you run 'apport-collect 803826' so we can see version information etc? As far as I can see, in 11.04 there is no place to paste a URI in the File dialog. Also, GIMP has an 'Open Location...' option which does exactly what you describe, but it would be nice if the functionality was integrated with the standard File Open dialog I agree.

I'm running Ubuntu 10.10. I usually upgrade once a year, so 11.10 will be mine. That bug is there since I use Ubuntu. I just used gimp as example - I use a lot of other apps that don't have a Open URL dialog. And it is 0 understandable for non-technical users. Could it be fixed?

I'm not entirely sure this bug is in nautilus - the file open dialog is usually an element of the UI toolkit, so perhaps something to be fixed in GTK?
