calibrate_lens_gui: allow crossing lines to be detected?

Bug Description
Is it possible to tweak the line-detection algorithm (possibly optionally) to recognise straight lines that form a grid?
I took a series of photos of a building which I thought would be great for lens calibration, since it consists of pale panels with dark gridlines in between (much-reduced photo attached); however, calibrate_lens_gui breaks the detected lines where they cross each other, so none of the lines ends up very long, and it doesn't derive good calibration values.
(This is with the version that comes with Ubuntu 12.04, which is based on 2011.4.0; I haven't tried the latest version, but I've found no indication that this has been worked on. Sorry if you have already done this.)
