Bug Description

This is a release 8.04 specific problem. This worked fine in Gutsy, but is broken after upgrading to Hardy Heron.

Used system-config-printer 0.7.81 to configure my HP 540C printer. I accepted the recommended driver "foomatic/hpijs". The printer would print first part of page then hang requiring a power cycle on the printer. I then tried the next two drivers down on the list with the same results.

The Linux Foundation Open Printing Database site http://www.openprinting.org pointed me toward the "djet500" driver. This was the 5th choice on the list from system-config-printer and worked fine.

I have enclosed a screenshot of the recommended drivers from system-config-printer.

According to openprinting.org the recommended driver for the HP DeskJet 540C is the hpijs driver.
So this is not a bug in foomatic-db or system-config-printer but probably a regression of the newer hplip in hardy.
Is your printer able to hold both a color an black cartridge at the same time? The 540 model can hold only one ink cartridge (black or color) and the 540C can hold both at the same time.

This model holds only one cartridge at a time black or color. It says 540
on the front (no 'C').

Since it's been a very long time since any additional info was added to this bug, I'm just checking to see if this is still an issue, and find out what additional work should be done on this bug.

I have fixed this problem recently by adding a new printer entry to the OpenPrinting database, so that there are distinct entries for the 540C and the 540. The foomatic-db package of Intrepid already contains the change. Problem is the HPLIP package. It contains a PPD meant for the HP DeskJet 540C which has the model name "HP DeskJet 540".

Aaron, Don, Dave, can someone of you check whether the old HP color inkjets work correctly and are correctly put into the device classes? It seems that the HP DeskJet 540 (without "C", carries only one cartridge at once, either blacl or CMY) does not work correctly. Note that there exists also an HP DeskJet 540C which carries the two cartridges at once. The 540C is not listed as supported by HPLIP at all.

hpijs.drv looks correct for me in terms of the DeskJet 540. It is in a "DJ540" device class which only ofgfers CMY color modes. Can you check whther the printers in this class actually work?

There is also the 550C in the "DJ540" device class. Does this model not carry both cartridges at once?

I am no longer sure that this is a driver problem. The problem I originally experienced happened immediately after upgrading to 8.04. It was 100% repeatable at the time and changing the driver as described above fixed it at the time.

Recently, it seems this printer has started to degrade such that the problem now occurs intermittently and no longer is associated to the driver choice but possibly with the size of the print job. I am not sure how I can determine if this is a printer problem or a driver problem.

These printers are very old, so I will not do any downstream patches on the HPLIP Ubuntu package, also the original poster is not sure whether his printer hardware is perhaps broken. Therefore I close the task for the Ubuntu package.

Upstream developers at HP, the problem in HPLIP is described in comment #6.
