scanner no longer works with Ubuntu 23.04

Bug Description
Just upgraded system from Ubuntu 22.04->
HPLIP was installed and is installed after the upgrade. Not sure version is the same, at any rate it's now at
$ apt list hplip
Listing... Done
hplip/lunar,now 3.22.10+dfsg0-1 amd64 [installed]
Printer still works, scanning doesn't.
hp-doctor script fails:
$ hp-doctor

it works okay with skanlite, which I just installed, for scanning a photo. But skanlite lacks the multipage pdf feature that xsane has so I still need a fix or workaround for that.
