hp-setup fails to install plugin

Bug Description

My HP printer requires a binary driver and the only way to install it is to run hp-setup from hplip package. It was doing job fine for last three years at least, but when I tried to install driver today on a fresh 16.04 installation, it couldn't download it.

I am having the same issue that the hp-plugin tells me:

Downloading plug-in from:
Downloading plug-in: [\ ] 0% error: Plugin download failed with error code = 8
()
error: file does not match its checksum. File may have been corrupted or altered

So I cannot use the printer wirelessly from Ubuntu at the moment.

Yup, same here and I just bought a brand new HP Color Laser printer that I can't use. I'm taking it back if this issue doesn't get fixed shortly.

Ok, here is how I was able to get my printer to work.

Step 1: Go to https://www.openprinting.org/download/printdriver/auxfiles/HP/plugins.
Step 2: Download the plugin files (both 'run' and 'run.asc') for the hplip version that you are using.
Step 3: Run hp-setup -g. Choose option p to specify a path to the plugin and use the path to the 'run' file that you downloaded in step 2. It may give you some errors, but install it anyway.

Now you should have a working printer.

Hi Vasya,

Normally, the checksum error occurs when the network is down or interrupted during the download of the plugin. We have verified that the plugin files on the server are not corrupt. Please check your network connection and re-try installing the plugins. If the issue still exists please download the plugins manually from below link.

It appears that the problem is fixed now. Today hp-setup successfully downloaded and installed plugin. Since there were no updates to the packages, I assume the issue was on HP servers.

Just to confirm that after some manual attempts failed, I also heard
from some other users that the issue was being looked at.

So I tried starting the plugin process again from the "HP Device
Manager" and this time it worked as expected - the bug seems to have
been fixed...

This was still an issue as of today with Linux Mint 19. I installed the plugin manually as Afshan suggested and it worked for me.

Download the latest files here

https://www.openprinting.org/download/printdriver/auxfiles/HP/plugins/

at the very bottom of the of the page find the latest files and copy them to a location you can easily remember to get to, from the CLI. Open a terminal and cd to the file location then just sh hplip-3.18.12.run and choose the right filename for the version you downloaded.

Follow the instructions and it will load the missing plugin for you. Setup will then work as will all the other commands in Hp Device Manager

Install apparmor utils

sudo apt-get install apparmor-utils

Run hplip-plugin

sudo aa-disable /usr/share/hplip/plugin.py

Run as normal user, not as root:

hplip-plugin

now the printer will get installed
