Bug Description

I have a Dell Desktop and a Sony laptop, both running Ubuntu 14.04. A couple of months ago, I bought an HP Officejet Pro 8610, to replace an older Officejet which had stopped scanning. I got it set up (hplip 3.14.10), with some effort, and was able to print from both computers. Today, on the desktop I was offered an upgrade to hplip 3.15.2, and like a good boy accepted this (much to my sorrow) with all the default settings. The printer is connected via wireless only. After the installation, the printer status is "Stopped - unplugged or turned off". hp-check returns code 12 for both the printer and the fax (apparently two devices according to hplip). No combination of turning off the computer and the printer resolves this "stopped" condition. The printer is found just fine during the setup process, and the printer itself is happy with its wireless settings. No combination of turning off the computer and the printer resolves this.

Meanwhile, I can print from the laptop (hplip 3..14.10, not upgraded) just fine, and the printer status is "idle."

I uninstalled hplip 3.15.2 from the desktop per the instructions from HP, then installed hplip 3.14.10 as I still had the files. This all went fine, apparently, but the result is the same - the printer is still stopped on the desktop, and of course, I can't print from the desktop. I can still print from the laptop.

Any suggestions would be appreciated - I am completely puzzled.

My apologies - I am new at this - the bug was created before I could finish saying what I wanted to say.

Ani Balakrishnan proposed the following answer:
Hi,

Please reconfigure the print queue using below command.

=>hp-setup -r (remove all print queues)
=>hp-setup

Try printing now.

I did as Ani suggested. The first command removed the printer and the fax nicely, and the hp-setup without arguments reran the setup diaolog. No printer or fax queue was created, even though the dialog was (apparently) completed successfully. I ran it again, and this time the printer amd fax queues were created. On the desktop the printer is still stopped, and on the laptop the printer is still idle. The printer is in fact powered on and to all appearances ready to print; the desktop just cannot detect this.

I also ran this

$sudo hp-logcapture

as Ani suggested, annd the result is attached.

Dino99 also responded, with some information regarding the status of hplip and python 3 (bug #1419121). This suggests that version 3.15.2 is still a work in progress as of Weds. 2/6/2015. Does this mean that I am not going to be able to print from my desktop until the issue is resolved, even using version 3.14.10 of hplip? I'm sorry to say I know nothing about python 3, or what it might have to do with my ability to print.

Thank you to both people who have responded; your interest and help is appreciated.

Has anyone else experienced this issue?

Hello Peter,

BUG# 1419121 does not affect your setup. In order to setup a print queue for wireless connection, there are two options.

OPTION1
----------------------
1) Connect USB cable (This is MUST for creating print queue over wifi. Once queue is created USB can be removed)

2) Remove all queues for this device (if any) by running below command.
$hp-setup -r

3) Add new queue using below command
$ hp-setup (Choose wifi option. Don't choose USB option)

or

$hp-wificonfig

4) Now remove the USB cable.

5) Try Printing Now.

OPTION2 (In this case USB cable is not required)
---------------------
1) Manually connect Printer to wifi router from printer front panel and note down the IP address.

2) Remove old print queues for this device using below command.
$hp-setup -r

3) Add new print queue using below command (make sure linux machine is also connected to same router)
$hp-setup <IP ADDRESS OF PRINTER>
e.g
$hp-setup 192.168.1.102

4) Try printing now.

If problem does not get resolved then please paste the output of
$hp-check -t

Thanks,
Sanjay

Thanks to Sanjay Kumar for his clear instructions as to how to set up a queuefor wireless printing.  The problem turned out to be that the desktop was pluggedinto my DSL router, and the printer connected to the wireless router.  The two
routers are adjacent, and connected directly by a 6' ethernet cable, but thatwas not good enough for hp-setup to find the printer.  I moved the desktopconnection from the DSL router to the wireless router, and things began to work.
What remains mysterious is why this was not an issue when I first set up theprinter two or three months ago, rather than now when I tried to upgrade to thelatest version of HPLIP?
Now, should I just be happy I have a solution, or should I try again to upgrade tothe new version of HPLIP?  Any thoughts?
