Binary package hint: gnome-applets

This involves the gnome applet keyboard indicator 2.22.2 on ubuntu 8.04 is has been present through a number of ubuntu releases.

I use the standard us and dvorak layouts which show up as USA and USA2 in the applet. When I start the computer clicking the applet switches between USA and USA2 but the actual layout stays the same.

The applet can be made to actually switch between layouts by going to the layout tab in keyboard preferences and adding or removing any layout. The applet then works untill the computer is rebooted.

An alternate workaround is to open a terminal and run setxkbmap. Currently I have the setxkbmap command set to run on every startup.

I don't know how to test what is actually going wrong. With directions I can do some testing and hopefully be useful.

Also I tested this in an intrepid virtualization which uses keyboard indicator 2.23.92 and the bug appears to no longer exist.

Is it going to be fixed in Hardy Heron?
It is a long term support release after all.

It was not fixed in hardy heron but as reported above it has been fixed in the next release intrepid ibex (8.10) due out the 30th of october. The only way it could get into the hardy repositories is if it was backported which is unlikely because it is not of extremely high demand.

Ok! I just wanted to note that I personally think an LTS release is more important than a non LTS one.
I guess we should upgrade even if we would rather stick to an LTS.

Yes LTS released are intended to be more stable and longer lasting than non
LTS part of that is not changing them once they are released. Any changes to
a system has the potential to cause new bugs. If you are using ubuntu on
your personal computer I would upgrade to non LTS releases. I rather enjoy
all the new updates and changes. Also ubuntu releases have tended to be
pretty stable in general. Hope you enjoy intrepid when you try it.

I do not agree that it is something little important. At least for people non-english languages. I live in Spain and have recently installed Hardy on my mothers computer in Czech Republic. When I got back to Spain, my mother called me that she cannot use linux anymore because it does not write in Czech. She is booting to Windows now. For an user that wants to use a computer to work this is a CRITICAL bug, because it does not allow him/her to do the job.

My mother is a nurse and to be asking her to know how to type setxkbmap cz in a terminal every time she wants to write the work report is not user friendly at all.

I would vote to get it fixed in Hardy (at least via workaround as mentioned earlier)
