DarkRoom theme no longer dark!

I tried with a new account. As you can see, GTK2 preferences fail to apply even for the default Human theme: the window frame is blue instead of caramel.

Wow, that looks pretty weird. I have never heard of this problem from anyone else though...not sure what is causing this. My guess is that there is some strange happening from updating again and again from an early alpha or such.

Everything has seemed to incorporate blue.

Adam, are you reporting what you see in that screenshot or what you see on your system?

I get the same problem on both of my Intrepid hosts. One is a fresh
install, the other an upgrade from Hardy.

Can anyone confirm this behavior? (Martin, not saying you are wrong, just wondering why nobody else has mentioned this as it seems to be a very apparent, easy to notice bug)

Martin, are you using the same home directory for the users? i.e. is there something in your .themes dir which would set these colors?

Kenneth, the screenshot, however i have th .gtkrc for the bug screenshot of the blue human located on my laptop. I obtained this file by messing with gtkrc, do YOU want it?

Not sure I get your point...why would I want a gtkrc with different colors defined?

Just to see if there are any colors/variables that are mis-defined

Just to confirm: in my case, there is NO .gtkrc in my home directory,
so the GNOME theme chooser should just work.

This sounds like a problem with the gnome-settings-daemon, not the human theme or darkroom theme, otherwise this would affect more people

I would normally tend to agree that gnome-settings-daemon is most
likely the real cause, since it's already causing problems whenever
returning from sleep/hibernate on my laptop since "upgrading" it to
Intrepid. However, my "always-on" desktop (also on Intrepid)
experiences the same problems too, so I'm really not sure what to
think anymore.

Would you mind trying to see if your guest user account (or another fresh user profile) experiences the same issue. I'm struggling to reproduce this.

Martin, if you are running compiz on those machines try turning it off and see what happens...there is also a bug in the nvidia drivers for some cards which causes strange effects.

I get the same result with or without Compiz. As I already said, the
fresh account experiences the same issue too.

I have a similar problem in Jaunty my theme not displaying correctly. When I use the 'guest' account everything is fine. gnome-settings-daemon is failing to load for me - and that is surely the cause of the theme problem here. I can't determine why gnome-settings-daemon isn't loading though, because --debug doesn't output anything and the process silently fails to start.

Returning to this issue for Jaunty, I find that I *still* cannot get the theme to apply properly, with or without Compiz. Worse, while it used to be that the GTK2 component would apply at least some of the time, now neither the window manager theme or the the GTK2 components apply correctly.

I am also having this problem.

It seems to be associated to when I installed and then uninstalled "gtk-chtheme". The default ubunutu theme manager does not change everything when a change themes, but if I reinstall "gtk-chtheme" and change the theme in both the default theme manager and the chtheme manger, everything looks good.

Are you guys experiencing the same behavior?

Here, what I noticed is that the GTK2 behavior has changed, WRT how global themes are treated. Previously, whatever was defined in /etc/gtk-2.0/gtkrc acted as a global fallback theme to use. Recently, the behavior seems to have changed to make it a hard override for the user themes defined via gconf, which effectively prevents the user form selecting the theme of their choice via the GNOME Appearance preferences. If the content of that global gtkrc is commented out or the file renamed to e.g. gtkrc.bak, then the user can choose their favorite theme again.

Well, now Ubuntu uses GTK3 themes and GTK2 acts only as fallback. I think this bug is outdated and should be marked as invalid or something, in order to clean bugs up a bit.
