Bug Description

Hello Owais,
after upgrading to ubuntu 12.10, it seems that the messaging menu is not shown by default until an application uses it. Since until now you had to click on the gmailwatchers entry in the me-menu to turn the blue notification icon from blue back to white. I assume some change in how gmailwatcher works is needed. I am currently running version 12.03-bzr~423~quantal1.

~$ /usr/bin/python /usr/bin/gmailwatcher --quite-start

(gmailwatcher:4744): GLib-GIO-CRITICAL **: This application can not open files.

Hi !
On my side, with ubuntu 12.10, the app works (eg. when receiving an email within gmail, I get the on-screen notification), but gmailwatcher does not appear at all in the messaging-menu, even with unread & notified emails, and the tray envelope is not updated (eg. remains grayed instead of turning to blue)
When running gmailwatcher --quite-start from terminal, I've got the same errors as Oier Mees, but emails are correctly notified..
gmailwatcher version: 12.03-bzr~423~quantal1

My problem is that the messaging menu is always hidden because I don't use any other online service. I get the notify-osd bubble notification when there is new mail, but naturally the "envelope" doesn't turn blue, since it isn't shown.

Ubuntu 12.10 had a change in how the indicator-messages API worked, which broke all existing applications using it (Pidgin doesn't work for me, either). Here's a link to the meta bug report, including working example code. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/indicator-messages/+bug/1040259 I haven't looked at GMail Watcher's code, so I don't know how much needs changed to port it over to the new API, but it should not be too much.
