Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-menus

ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver fails, I can install as usual. However upon restart system will not allow driver, have to use low graphics for one login. Only fix I can find is to un-install ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver. Restart and back to normal video mode, crappy thing is I can not watch video's or do anything that requires my driver. Is there a fix, patch or solution? Would really like to use Ubuntu 10.04. Yes I know this is Alpha.

Hi!

http://wiki.x.org says : "If you appear to use the correct driver and you still keep getting this message it is very likely that your chipset isn't supported (yet). In this case you may try the vesa driver or - if this doesn't work - the vga driver."
I have a ATI Radeon Mobility M6 LY and had to switch to use the vesa driver to get all things right.
If I use the fglrx driver I get this from the Xorg.0.log:

(II) LoadModule: "fglrx"
(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers//fglrx_drv.so
(II) Module fglrx: vendor="FireGL - ATI Technologies Inc."
 compiled for 1.4.99.906, module version = 8.66.10
 Module class: X.Org Video Driver
(II) Primary Device is: PCI 01@00:00:0
(WW) Falling back to old probe method for fglrx
(II) ATI Proprietary Linux Driver Version Identifier:8.66.10
(II) ATI Proprietary Linux Driver Release Identifier: 8.66.1
(II) ATI Proprietary Linux Driver Build Date: Sep 3 2009 21:35:19
(II) PCS database file /etc/ati/amdpcsdb not found
(II) Creating PCS database from initial defaults instead
(EE) No devices detected.

Hope that helps a little.

Hi Phil!

What is your graphic card?
For my graphic card I use now the radeon driver. But when I open the gnome-system-monitor it tells me that something is wrong. 'Cause of this message I got in the terminal:

(gnome-system-monitor:2291): Wnck-WARNING **: Unhandled action type _OB_WM_ACTION_UNDECORATE

Does anybody know what it means? I only see stripes in that window.

And, Phil, you can do this:
If you have gstreamer packages installed you can open (with a terminal) "gstreamer-properties" to adjust some things for audio and video playback. It helped me. Now I can watch movies again even in fullscreen.

Good luck
Berni

Hi all, I'd suggest closing this bug as we've got new FGLRX drivers and berni doesn't have this hardware anymore -- Micro2Gb do you still have issues ?
