Bug Description

- OS: Elementary OS 0.4 Loki
- Macbook 2,1 (http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/macbook/specs/macbook-core-2-duo-2.16-black-13-mid-2007-specs.html)
- 3GB 667 DDR2 RAM (upgraded)
- Onboard Intel GMA 950

Description:
'top' shows Gala CPU usage spiking (up to 100%) bogging down the desktop.
'gala --replace' makes desktop temporarily usable until gala starts again.
Symptoms suggest CPU is software rendering however 'glxinfo | grep render' shows direct rendering (yes) and OpenGL rendering via my Intel GM945 GMA 950

Hello,

Are you able to test if this issue manifests on other distribution, gnome-based or not?

Would you be able to build Gala from source, do some profiling (perhaps with gprof), and pinpoint this issue better?

Hi matzipan,

I had previously installed Ubuntu 16.04 LTS Xenial Xerus (Unity DE) on this device with no such complications.

I will try compile Gala from source and run gprof against it.

same problem, same graphic card.

with mutter --replace also use 100% of cpu.

with metacity --replace is ok

I own the same black Macbook2,1
glxinfo shows direct rendering is enabled
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI Intel(R) 945GM

I noticed that running "gala --replace --sync" makes the system usable again.
Hope this helps to narrow down the root cause of the slowdown.

Hi Andreas,

Can you confirm if you have also upgraded to 3gb RAM? And if so are you using a matched pair 2x2GB 667mHz DDR2?

Hi Shane,

Yes, I did. 2x2GB Crucial CT2KIT25664AC667. Do you think that's the problem?
I am running 0.3.2 Freya 64bit for now without problems.
But I haven't updated the HWE stack because I'm worried it'll break things.
