2015-08-21 14:10:49 Watson-dominic description I create a new layout under /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/ and then edit /usr/share/X11/xkb/rules/evdev.xml to include the layout. When I then go to select a keyboard layout, I expect my new layout to appear in list of layout choices, but it does not. Attempting to set the layout with "setxkbmap my_layout" has no effect on the keyboard layout (although it does not complain that the layout does not exist). Additionally, if I edit a standard layout file, e.g. /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/gb, the edits have no effect when I use the standard GB layout. Originally discussed here: http://elementaryos.stackexchange.com/questions/1264/how-to-provide-and-select-a-custom-keyboard-layout-xkb-methods-failing/1323#1323 The layout technique I am aiming to replicate is discussed here: http://domwatson.codes/2014/11/who-needs-capslock-anyway-part-2.html I create a new layout under /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/ and then edit /usr/share/X11/xkb/rules/evdev.xml to include the layout. When I then go to select a keyboard layout, I expect my new layout to appear in list of layout choices, but it does not. Attempting to set the layout with "setxkbmap my_layout" does work, however (I had previously thought this was not working but this was in fact due to a separate issue that I'm debugging before reporting). In essence, this is simply a UI issue (custom layouts and custom layout variations do not appear in the keyboard layout picker). http://elementaryos.stackexchange.com/questions/1264/how-to-provide-and-select-a-custom-keyboard-layout-xkb-methods-failing/1323#1323

When I then go to select a keyboard layout, I expect my new layout to appear in list of layout choices, but it does not. As a workaround, the custom layout can be set with `setxkbmap my_layout`. However, whenever you then enter the keyboard settings dialog, your custom setxkbmap options are reset and you need to reapply. If the custom layout was in the UI, this would not be an issue. http://elementaryos.stackexchange.com/questions/1264/how-to-provide-and-select-a-custom-keyboard-layout-xkb-methods-failing/1323#1323
