Grey, 5 pixel thick left and right window border on every window

Confirmed here. Fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04. Tried downloading latest update from launchpad, no luck. See screenshot for better understanding: there are borders on both sides of windows.

Confirmed here on Fedora 13. Same grey 5 pixel border. I think it has something to do with the version of gnome/metacity or the engine dust uses.

No, it was a conscious design choice. The borders were added to remedy a
resizing problem (hard to resize from the sides) and to define a window's
borders even without shadows. This was only supposed to be in the beta
release but made it to final because no one was complaining IIRC (until I
stumbled upon a forum post, and this bug of course). We're open to
suggestions about this problem.

As a workaround, download the Dust Extras package and select Dust Borderless
as window controls to get the old borders.

There used to be an older Dust Bordered theme as well which has thin dark coloured borders which looked nice, nothing like the visual atrocity right now. Why not just use that one?

Also, why was it hard to resize from the sides? The window edges were still very obvious right?

Finally, the loading bar of Dust was changed from the glossy two toned animated one to a drab coloured, no tone, non-animated one in Lucid, is that a bug or a design change?

With a 1px side border, it can be hard to hit sometimes. (But yes, you can
resize from the bottom corners.)

That was a design change too. I actually like the glossy progress bar, but
all the glossy stuff was changed in 0.5. Maybe something in between will
work better.

Are you the main Dev for the Dust theme?

I just feel that it used to be the most polished sleek theme and it has lost a lot of its charm now. Lets be honest with ourselves, Linux/GNOME/GTK+ themes aren't usually the most polished things around, Dust was an exception, so I think it's important not to go backwards :) What about the older Dust borders before it became a community theme installed by default in Ubuntu?

Specifically, why was the glossy progress bar changed? Was it forced upon you or was it choice? The old bar was awesome, not only did it have a gradient, vivid colours but was also animated to make it seem like its going faster (perception :)). The new one isn't even neutral, its just........ugly (sorry :))

I think the older Dust, Dust bordered were both perfect. Dust Sand is still awesome but the window controls could be made more obvious (small glyphs like in Dust normal instead of just radio buttons).

Finally, Dust now seems to occupy less of the Nautilus (and in general GTK apps) toolbar than before (breadcrumbs/location bar not themed anymore), but I'm guessing this was probably a GTK+ change yeah?

I'm one of the main devs. Mainly, it was dashua doing v0.5 (in Lucid),
and I was too busy with school to maintain the theme. We'll take these
comments into consideration. :)

The nautilus breadcrumbs bar is a nautilus change. The smaller GTK
toolbars are probably a theme change (so that toolbars don't use too
much vertical space).

Relevant to the change in the loading bar. The previous was not only had more eye candy but was perceptibly faster :)

I've upgraded my family computers to lucid, but kept my main computer on karmic due partly to how excellent the dust theme was looking "way back then" (laziness is another factor, but I figured I'd mention it). I vastly prefer the older look, and I wish I had been keeping up with development to be vocal about the changes made in the lucid build (I shouldn't have relied on the karmic shipped version, I guess). I like everything the others have mentioned about the older look, and am still not really sure why the sides had to be visually enlarged to gain a better size for gripping... is there a way to code a few transparent pixels on either side, or possibly just move the resizable area inward on the window, rather than making the borders so glaringly obvious?

I'm very glad to hear (from the report I filed) that the issues I was having with dust are now fixed, but the new visual changes feel like a step backward... it looks much more generic now. I'm glad to see this changed to "in progress", and I'll keep an eye out here for any new builds that need feedback. Is this the best place to do that? I'd been watching the ubuntu art page for a while, but giving feedback there always seemed odd to me.

There's no way to code transparent borders AFAIK, so we're reverting to the 1-px borders from older versions. Also, we prefer having bugs filed here than on the wiki page; I don't really check the wiki often.

The window border change (and the progress bar change, as discussed earlier) is now in bzr.

What happened? Why wasn't this fixed for Ubuntu 10.10. The default package still gives the ugly borders and the non glossy non animated progress bar.

Did Ubuntu neglect to include the latest version?
