Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. I have classified this bug as a bug in dpkg.

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport, either via the appropriate application's "Help -> Report a Problem" menu or using 'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

I think it is a dpkg bug that this error message does not explain what is going on. The sequence of events is:

1. write() something to stdout
2. fflush(stdout)
3. check ferror(stdout) and display an error message based on the value of errno

If write() returns an error, but fflush() does not (because there is nothing left in the buffer?), then we end up with this "Success" result (and the actual error code is lost)

Hi
 Thanks for the email
I have been trying to run an upgrade of Ubuntu9.10 to 10.04 and
originally it loaded bot now with updates it downloads the
packages but during the installation it fails and the screen goes
into low res mode with a list of options none of which work
I have to then restart the laptop and the package is not loaded
The Kernel was downloaded but did not install
this has happened with - 17 and then - 18 neither has installed
the original -16 is the only one that is on there now
Apart from that I keep getting a red splash on Menu bar that tells me
there has been a crash but

Thanks for a brilliant platform You guys are fantastic
 Regards
 gary

Brachayehhudit, the problem solved itself for me just by running the software installation again. While Ubuntu does work better with a bit of technical saviness, it's not too difficult to pick it up in bits and pieces over time, and I would encourage you to stick with it and learn to do the upgrades yourself over time. No need to pay someone else when they don't know what they're doing. BTW, it would not work to take your hard drive out and take it to someone else. The installation is hardware specific, so the person you take it too would need to have the exact same hardware configuration, which is not likely.
