Nautilus Icon shows up as "Network" in Dock

Bug Description

No matter how I launch nautilus, even from the command line, when minimized to the dock, Docky shows the "Network" icon, and literally displays the text "Network" when one rolls over it. I created a new launcher for Nautilus, and that does properly display in the dock.

Also if it shows an icon and text, that means that *some* launcher on your system is set with exec=nautilus, that icon, and that text! Try looking in /usr/share/applications and see if you can find such a .desktop file.

Am running 9.10.

There are several entries that show exec=nautilus, and perhaps this is where
Docky is getting confused. I think there may be icon caching issues at play
here, as I seemed to have remediated this by doing the following with
unexpected (but OK) results. I removed previous nautilus instances from
dock. I created a new desktop launcher specific to nautilus, then attached
the default nautilus icon to it. After having done this, anytime I run
nautilus, whether from the various entries in Gnome menus, or from the
command line, they all appear to pick up this icon.

Anyway, I offer this as FYI...

Do you have enough information to resolve this bug?

In case if not I'll try to provide additional information about how I get similar issue.

Everything was okay until I accidentally deleted «CD/DVD Creator» menu item, and due to the bug in Menu Editor I was not able to undo this action, for I closed this app before noticing.

After that I manually created app launcher which included «nautilus» command.

After that Docky started to display a CD/DVD Creator icon and text every time the Nautilus is launched.

No we know exactly what the problem is, we just have no solution.

There are tons of .desktop files in /usr/share/applications that have 'exec=nautilus' so Docky will use *one* of those. Which one is probably based on alphabetized filenames or something, I'm not sure exactly but it doesn't matter. The point is it picks one and uses it, and the one it picks probably is wrong.

Please, do something about this bug, for not only Nautilus launchers are confused, but also Chromium Web Apps.

And this renders them invalid after every log out, very annoying.

Chromium web apps are a completely different bug.

this bug report is complete, the problem is that docky's dev do'nt know what to do with that...

maybe docky should check the window title to match it with the dock icon...

I have this same problem, but in my case, the program that apears when i open nautilus is the DVD Burner.
there is no way to fix this?

Since there seem to be no solution to determine which parameters were used to start a nautilus window, why don't you just display the name of the launcher with the least parameters, which is the "default" nautilus.
This would make it better, because it would be less incorrect :)

actually, when a nautilus window is opened a Nautilus icon is shown in the dock and hovering the mouse shows "File manager"

I'll mark this bug as solved

Don't be too hasty about that — it is worth double-checking.

It does not just affect any Nautilus instance running, see detailed explanation about the command line and .desktop files in duplicates of this bug.

Are you sure that you have .desktop files with the line «nautilus» and still are unaffected?

Don't change the bug status. We have not committed anything for this.

This bug still exists. Not every user will see a network icon. Some will see File Manager, some Network, some will see the Brasero Create CD icon. It varies.
