We are currently developing our latest release of Zorin OS (which is ranked number 16 on DistroWatch) and looking at different options for a window-switching applet. We would prefer to use DockBarX in Zorin OS 6 as the optimal solution, provided that the applet gets ported to GNOME Panel 3.
Please let us know if you will be dealing with this issue in the near future. We would greatly appreciate if you could give us this information as our final decision depends on this.

I've been working on a port to gtk3 for a while but it's going slow. Right now I get a black bar and no error messages when I start the gtk3 port of dockx. So I have no idea what to do with it. I'm sad to say it but don't expect any progress any time soon.

Dockbarx runned as a stand alone dock on top of the panel using the invisible dock theme, the corner mode and an offset to move the dock in the right position is pretty much indistinguishable from an applet. As long as you use compiz and not metacity as your window manager at least. Metacity tend to put the panel on top of the dock half the time. I wouldn't hesitate to suggest this solution to any user but I'm not sure how well it works for a big distro like ZorinOS. On other hand, to me, gnome3 fallback panel seems a way to immature for a big distro like ZorinOS as well. It crashes pretty much every other day for me and then I use only one applet with it, the clock.

Good luck whatever you decide.

Hi,
Linux Mint 12 will have a window list for GNOME3, and their own bottom panel. Perhaps the source for the window list will be useful. Here is a review that shows the list:

Here are download links for Mint 12:

MATE is a GNOME2 fork.

I checked the window list extension, it's written completely in javascript just as all other extensions out there. To make DockbarX a shell script seems to require nothing less than a complete rewrite.
