I'd like to be able to play playlists from the Rhythmbox plugin, just like I can play an album or artist directly from Do.

This took a while, but I implemented this last week (very quickly, from my perspective; the same week I started using Do); it should be in the next release. You can get the source from https:/
I'm not a member of the dev team, so I have no idea when the next release will be, however.
