Bug Description

1. Ensure Thunderbird is installed and open.
2. Choose "File/Send Document as Open Document Text..."
3. A Thunderbird window with a new email appears. The subject is that of the document's file name, but no document is attached.

I verified the document was really not attached by sending the email. The email arrived without any attachments.

This problem can be worked around by accessing "Tools/Options/Internet/E-mail" and changing "E-mail program" to "thunderbird". After making this change, the document is seen attached in the Thunderbird window.

Previously, the e-mail program was given as "sensible-lomua". I have no such program on my system.

Problem description:

Steps to reproduce:
1. write a document, save it as testdocument.odt anywhere
2. choose File->Send->Document as E-mail

Current behavior:
Thunderbird opens (configured as default in Ubuntu) with the message composer, the mail title says "testdocument.odt", but the message body is empty. Same when choosing File->Send->"E-mail as OpenDocument-text" or "E-mail as Microsoft Word". No attachment is generated,

Expected behavior: Document text should appear as message body, or as attachment.

Operating System: Ubuntu
Version: 4.1.3.2 release

Additional info: maybe it's not a bug in LO, but in Ubuntu, or in Thunderbird - I can't tell that from my POV.

IMHO this is not a related bug, but describes EXACTLY the same problem. It's just about PDF, and not generic. But the problem (and possible solution) is the same. If noone minds I'll mark this as duplicate.

The downstream bug in Ubuntu seems to be https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libreoffice/+bug/1217191.
Either the sensible-louma command is broken, or should be replaced. So maybe this is an Ubuntu packaging bug?

This is apparently a Ubuntu-specific problem. Neither TDF nor other distros' (e.g., Fedora) builds have a "sensible-louma".

So "Send Document as Open Document Text" is what should create a mail with a ODT attached. This is what this bug description originally wanted.

"Send Document as Email" should create a Email with the mail body filled with the document body. This is a different issue. It is tracked as fdo#75825 upstream and as per https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=75825#c7 affects multiple distros.

THIS bug will continue to track the "Send Document as Open Document Text" issue, the "Send Document as Email" is only tracked upstream for now. Please open a NEW launchpad bug if you want to have it tracked for Ubuntu too. Thus removing the remote watch on fdo#75825 here (add it to the NEW bug, if you want one).

Christian González (droetker) wrote :

While it workarounds the issue temporarily, it should be solved in the package.
There are two options for Ubuntu:
* pre-fill the field in the libreoffice package with "thunderbird" (Ubuntu-centric)
* add a link /usr/bin/sensible-louma which points to /usr/bin/thunderbird

I'd prefer the second option because: it leaves LO alone and seems to be more update proof.
This link could be managed by update-alternative.

So instead of changing the LO value (which anyway is only user specific, so you would have to change that for EACH single user on your system, just do a

ln -s /usr/bin/thunderbird /usr/local/bin/sensible-louma

This workarounds the issue as well and a) leaves room for updates, b) doesn't touch the LO settings so all users are affected.

Christian González (droetker) wrote :

Two things more:
1. My comment above is obsolete anyway, as the new LO does not use sensible-lomua any more. It talks directly to the ExternalMailer.
2. It still does NOT work here (Ubuntu 14.04, LO 4.2.4). Thunderbird is opened after "Send email as ODT", name is filled in, but there is no attachment added.
I can NOT confirm that this bug is fixed.

It still doesn't work in LO 4.3.0.4 with a up to date system of ubuntu 14.04.

This is a really annoying bug and affects those users with the least experience the most.

If I run this from the shell:

thunderbird -compose "<email address hidden>,<email address hidden>',<email address hidden>',subject='dinner',body='How about dinner tonight?',attachment='/home/liuk/test.txt'"

as in the example on the Thunderbird website (http://kb.mozillazine.org/Command_line_arguments_%28Thunderbird%29) , a new window with the right fields filled and with the attachment is opened, so it seems more a LibreOffice issue which is not invoking Thunderbird with correct parameters.

Tested on :
lsb_release -sd
Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS

thunderbird -v
Thunderbird 31.6.0
