This is potentially really useful information for debugging and such.

adding the version is easy, I can just update it manually everytime we switch versions. I can't figure out a way to get the revision number programatically though

You could use ‘bzr revno’.

if its installed from a deb it should be a release right? So I don't think it matters what bzr rev it is

yeah, that makes sense, I thought it might be useful to know which rev their
released package came from

You could check the revision number during the install process and write (to) an installed file.

Daily builds to .deb have revision number in their version.
