Gens is a free Sega Genesis emulator. It runs on Windows systems (using DirectX), on Linux (using SDL) and on Microsoft's Xbox. A port to the Sega Dreamcast, known as Gens4All, is currently in development. Development of Gens began in 1999. As of July 2006, the current version (2.14) advertises full compatibility with 92% of all Genesis games and is considered to be one of the most compatible Genesis emulators available, although its Yamaha YM2612 emulation is far from perfect.

I'll give it a try. Would love to see this gem in Ubuntu. I can't find the package source on SF, so this will be done from scratch.

Jacob, you might want to work on Gens/Gs http://info.sonicretro.org/Gens/GS
It's a fork of gens (yes, one more) but it's coming out real. The developer is rewriting the code and make great improvements to gens (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=959074).

Debs are already built for Ubuntu 8.10+ so you have some work done already.

António:

Thanks, I'll take a look. There's an upstream licensing issue at the
moment with the original Gens package (the starscream emulation
library is not GPL and requires an exception on the Gens GPL license)
and it also appears to be present with the version you mentioned. If
we can get cooperation with the original Gens author and Gens/GS then
this would be excellent.

Oh licensing issues... Hope the authors can get along. Let me know if you need any help.

Unassigning myself from this, as things really aren't moving along upstream. If anyone wants to try to take this one, I've started this bug regarding licensing issues:
