Java Applet Window cannot be closed.

Confirmed on gecko-1.8 and sun-j2sdk1.5_1.5.0+update06 with the stated applet.

I confirm this problem in Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn. Sun's Java Applets cannot be closed by clicking on the close button of the window border. This really impairs the usage of games and Java-based chat rooms, especially those that only allow a user to have two private messages open at a time. The user simply cannot close the Applet windows and they stack in the task panel until Firefox is closed.

Also confirmed in Hardy 8.04 / FF 3.0 / JRE 6 Update 6. This is pain!

Also confirmed in Hardy 8.04 / Epiphany 2.22.2 / open-jdk 6 and Hardy 8.0.4 open-jdk 6 appletviewer. Attached is an applet that causes the problem.

Which Java package do you have installed?
Which Firefox extensions do you have installed?

Yes, it does happen with the plugin provided by Sun Microsystems.

What exactly do we --non-programmers-- need to do in order to apply this fix?

I am using Intrepid Ibex with firefox 3.0.5 and this bug exists, and its not only an ubuntu bug, it also happened in fedora 9.... sabayon however didnt have this problem.... I read above about a solution, but could u guys please translate that to english?

The english translation is that this bug is fixed in jaunty, the ubuntu development version which will eventually become the 9.04 release. There is no released ubuntu version that includes the fix for this bug.

This bug still exists in Ubuntu Jaunty 9.04, with Firefox 3.0.13 and even with 3.5. Applet windows simply cannot be closed.

I confirm this bug on Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala using 3.5.4 and Sun Java 6.0 plugin.

It seems that this bug is here to stay. The sad thing is that I'm sure the solution might be a couple of lines of code.

Intrepid Ibex reached end-of-life on 30 April 2010 so I am closing the
report. The bug has been fixed in newer releases of Ubuntu.

It has not been fixed, not even in 10.04. Windows do close, but just visually, because they remain open in the background. I have tested this in www.elchat.com (spanish) , they allow you to open up to 2 private conversations at the same time. When you close them, and want to open a new one, they will say that you have already 2 conversations open.... in Windows it does not happen, so it is an specific bug for Linux Java versions......... so no, it has not been fixed.

Alex, why don't you do the test that I just mentioned and see for yourself that IT IS NOT FIXED. I don't know who confirmed that it was fixed, but if you do what I told you, you will see that in fact it is not well fixed. Windows seem to close, but they remain hidden somewhere, and you can confirm it by the system telling you that you can't open new windows because there are already 2 open....

Daniel, the "Confirmed" status means that the bug still exists. i.e. that it is not fixed.

REAL SOLUTION: STEP FOR 100% SOLUTION.
Unistall Sun Java 6.0 Plugin
Restart PC
Install OpenJDK Java runtime

Now: All aplication Java Applet Windows is closed when clicking on the close button (X) on the Window Manager title bar !!!

miguelrojas, you are wrong. with openJDK it's possible to close the chat window, but this will not close the active chat session. Your chat partner is not able to see, that you left the private chat.

Most websites, which provide chat rooms based on volano chat software, give a limit in privat chats you can participate at the same time. during the fact, that you cannot close the chat sessions, you will reach sometime the limit. As a consequence you are not able to start more private chats, because the software assumes you already talking to "n" persons.

To conclude this, with OpenJDK it is only possible to "hide" the chat windows.

No... it is still not fixed, trying in 10.04 64 bits. There are only few days to 10.10, I wonder if this sturdy bug will be fixed finally... I am thiking that we have not to have a lot of hope about it.

Well... after more than five (!) years (are there awards for longest standing bugs anywhere?), I noticed I'm not visiting that many sites anymore which use Java. And when I do visit them, Java is not working at all most of the time (e.g. map24.com -> interactive map). At least we've gone from 'Unknown' importance to 'Medium' importance. Keeping up this pace, I guess this bug will get high priority by the time Ubuntu 16.04 is going to be released :P

Same bug still there for years.
Even on 12.04 neither icedtea6 nor icedtea 7 work correctly.
