Some of this could also just be improved by making the 'find_branches'
functionality a bit faster.

I think my point was that it shouldn't block the UI then it doesn't matter how fast the scanning is, as long as it's decent.

This appears to be a duplicate of the first entry in bug:453124 which has had no attention other than being moved to 'wishlist' status. Can I suggest the related issues there be looked at in association with this bug.
