reboot-required module causes status bar spam on various SSH clients

Bug Description
Please refer to the attached GIF.
You will notice that I do not have reboot-required module selected. When I select it and choose apply, you will see that the status bar gets repeated over and over, filling up the terminal with a "rainbow status bar". You can see that the reboot icon that should be like a Browser's refresh icon comes up as a question mark block/diamond.
Confirmed to be able to replicate this bug in Byobu supplied with the latest stable Debian, Ubuntu 18 LTS on both Putty and BitVise SSH Terminal. Mac OS Terminal correctly shows the unicode character, it seems.
A valid workaround is to disable reboot-required module.

OK, looking at some other resolved bugs and disabling UTF-8 does stop the status bar spam. So something in that "Unknown" question-mark box symbol is causing it to glitch out.
