after compiz ugrade top menu and launcher disappeared in Unity 3D

Bug Description

After a recent Precise upgrade to Unity 5.8 and compiz 0.9.7.2, in Unity 3D only the desktop background is visible. After Ctrl-Alt-F1 and reboot to Unity 2D (which runs fine) I did unity --reset and this was the output:

unity-panel-service: no process found -this part of the error message was certainly a clue - I re-ran unity-panel-services and voilà, the launcher and top menu are back.
I still don't know why or how I lost that component of unity is I had not played with ccsm or done anything peculiar
