Bug Description

Text Editor is the first entry on the left of the Most Frequently Used Dash menu.

Every other invocation fails to launch gedit. The Text Editor icon displays in the launcher, blinks a few times, goes away, and nothing happens. gedit is not launched.

This is reproducible systematically for every other (2nd) invocation during this boot session.

I will try to reboot and see if this problem persists.

I have rebooted 3x and the problem is reproducible across all 3 boots.

Every odd (1,3,5) invocation fails. Under these circumstances, the Text Editor icon blinks 4x in the launcher and then disappears. gedit is not launched.

Every even (2,4) invocation works. The Text Editor icon blinks 3x (try #2) and 1x (try #4).

The icon blink counts were only measured on boot #3.

Other icons in the Dash Most Frequently Used list that were randomly selected do not exhibit this problem.

Thank you for your bug report, do you use unity2d or 3d? That seems similar to bug #827414

The login id panel option has Ubuntu selected and not Ubuntu 2D, so I assume that means 3D.

I have some doubts because Unity would not install at all in Ubuntu 11.04 on this machine. Now on 11.10, it does.

"Ubuntu" might be selected on your LightDM screen, but on every bootup, Gnome-session might be selecting Unity-2D based on your GPU.

This AskUbuntu question will help you in identifying the version of Unity you use: http://askubuntu.com/questions/62001/am-i-using-unity-or-unity-2d

Okay, from apport data its clear you ARE using Unity 2D. So yeah, this bug seems similar to bug #827414 . Try installing all updates on your 11.10 system, and if the issue continues, then please re-open this bug.

This test machine has been reinstalled with Xubuntu 11.10 so I can no longer perform the requested test at this time.

However, at the time of testing and bug reporting, all updates were in place.

closing the bug since you no longer use Unity and did a new install so further info cannot be collected.
