Bug Description

During do-release-upgrade, the following output occurs:

Preparing to replace mysql-server 5.1.54-1ubuntu4 (using .../mysql-server_5.1.58-1ubuntu1_all.deb) ...
Unpacking replacement mysql-server ...
Preparing to replace mysql-client-core-5.1 5.1.54-1ubuntu4 (using .../mysql-client-core-5.1_5.1.58-1ubuntu1_amd64.deb) ...
Unpacking replacement mysql-client-core-5.1 ...
Preparing to replace mysql-client-5.1 5.1.54-1ubuntu4 (using .../mysql-client-5.1_5.1.58-1ubuntu1_amd64.deb) ...
Unpacking replacement mysql-client-5.1 ...
Preparing to replace psmisc 22.13-1 (using .../psmisc_22.14-1_amd64.deb) ...
Unpacking replacement psmisc ...

The upgrade halts there indefinitely. I issued a service mysql stop and then output continued:

mysql stop/post-start, (post-start) process 19685
Unpacking replacement mysql-server-5.1 ...
Preparing to replace mysql-server-core-5.1 5.1.54-1ubuntu4 (using .../mysql-server-core-5.1_5.1.58-1ubuntu1_amd64.deb) ...

The rest of the upgrade seems to be passing without incident. Can someone confirm this bug? It seems odd that mysql would have a problem stopping itself to allow the upgrade, but that is apparently the case. It is worth nothing this appears to not be a new issue. I had the same exact issue. Did an alt-f2 and stopped mysql like you and the install continued.

Two users, marking Confirmed and opening tasks against Natty/Oneiric. Upgrade failure so setting High.

I can recreate this in a VM and enable whatever debugging would be most helpful. Can someone let me know what options/logs would be most useful in this case beyond the obvious tailing of dmesg?

The same happened for me upgrading from 11.04 to 11.10.

Solution:

alt and F2
then type: gksudo service mysql stop

hey presto! install continues

I think this may be a duplicate of bug #711635 . Basically if the mysql configuration is wrong, and mysqld can't start, mysql hangs forever in 'start/respawn'. Can somebody who is affected verify that the state of the job is 'start/respawn' before you do the stop?

Also, makring the main task as Won't Fix, because Precise has 5.1 instead of 5.5.
