Bug Description

Windows 7, norwegian version
Inkscape 0.48+devel r10669 (and earlier versions too)

Steps to reproduce
* Open Inkscape. Drag an image into Inkscape (or just open Inkscape with image as argument/drop image onto link on desktop).
* Choose "Link to image" when asked.
* Do whatever you feel for.
* Try to save svg file (save as, if image was dropped onto pgogram icon).

On this particular computer, this steps will make Inkscape not responding, and all changes is then lost.

When using latest stable version 0.48.2 the same steps as mentioned abowe won't lead to Inkscape hanging. Stable version works.
About every develop versions released after the stable 0.48.2 version seems to have this fault.

On my WIndows XP computer, develop versions doesn't hang when I try to follow the steps asbove.

a) full path name of the source jpg file

c) path name where Inkscape is installed
d) does this happen with all jpg files or just some. If just some, could you attach the jpg file?

Hi. I had this feeling that it would be hard to reproduce on another W7 computer. I use 32 bit windows (forgot to say).

I also have admin rights on that computer.

I'm trying to answer the best I can:

a - on a network drive. Cannot remembered if I have tried with a local drive.
b - Have tried several locations, both on network drive and on local drive.
c - D:\Programmer\Inkscape (compressed version, not installed)
d - It seems to happen with all jpg files. I'm not completely sure wheter it's a problem with png's too.

It's on a work-computer, and I cannot effort using much time to test. I can double chechk tomorrow at work if I get time for it.

First time this happens I was using r10638 (I think). Before that time, this failure never happens.
After it happends first time, this failure was around for all nightly builds of Inkscape.
I also tested r10414 (that I've considering being a rater stable version), but that too failed - hang when saved and picture file was linked in.

It's just like if a "failure-switch for all beta versions" was turned on that day. Like everybody else - I haven't done anything that should "activate" this failure.

My bet is that there must be a setting somewhere that Inkscape "doesn't like". So is it to find the settings folder on W7.

Ok, now I have done some basic test.

I tested with version r10669on the win7 computer:

It doesn't matter if I import a jpg or a png file. Crash when save.

It doesn't matter where the files (both where I tried to save the svg file and the location of raster file) is located.

I did a total of four test with any combination of svg location (local and on network drive) and raster format (png/jpg).

I deleted the settings file, Inkscape still fails to save.

But, if any dot in filename may cause such a bug, then I can inform that the path of the setting folder does include a dot. It is:
C:\Users\<name>.<companyname>\AppData\Roaming\inkscape

There is no way I can change this folder name.

Hi.

Newest version of Inkscape is still totally useless.

I assume you cannot reproduce the error because the setup of my work computer is:
* Norwegian 7 (32bit)
* Admin right, but is a computer is in a domain
* My username is because of the above condition containing a dot
* Recent updates. Again, I guess language is a major factor here.

Aso I assume that a W7 automatic update could be the direct cause of the error I get.

I have added some screenshots on how the error looks like (the num #1 is slightly different because I couldn't hit prtScn fast enough at first chance).

I hope you guys solve this before you decide to release Inkscape as a stable version, because it isn't stable much stable here.

I'm successfully using version 0.48.2. Any version later than that will crash on the computer I'm using at work.

The screen shots is taken while running (crashing) version Inkscape 0.48+devel r10773.

Thanks

Hi.

A colleague at work allowed me to run Inkscape on her windows machine. This windows 7 32 bit is pretty much set up the same that mine computer at work.
Unless one critical thing that I haven't been able to test before. My colleague's computer has never had any version of Inkscape running on it before, it's pretty much a clean setup.

So I downloaded Inkscape version r10817 (2. january 2012) from here
"https://skydrive.live.com/?cid=09706d11303fa52a&sc=documents&id=9706D11303FA52A!137"

and unpacket all files in "C:\Program files\Inkscape\"

Then I did the same test (linked image and try to save svg file) as before.

Guess what? Inkscape CRASHED AGAIN, just the same way. Just the same windows warning - "Inscape has stopped working, windows is looking for a solution on the problem".

That one solves the biggest question earlier - Did this error occur only for one single computer. No, it don't. It seems to be a problem with about all computers running a updated W7 32bit norwegian version AND being set up in an office environoment.

However I don't know if this error will occur on a W7 32bit norwegian computer in a home enviromoment.

Hi.

I have tried several times now to run GDB. Problem is that Inkscape does not behave as when run normally. When run from GDB, Inkscape crashes already when trying to import a picture.

I've installed Virtualbox and tried to install an updatet W7 32bit english version. I could not reproduce the error.

Anyway, I've collected some entries from Windows log and I hope the information can be to any help.
I followed same procedure as described in first post. Here is the log(s):

Hi.

Here is some more info as I continue to search for any log or log files that can provide help.

I have tried to run Inkscape by GDB, but it turns out that Inkscape behaves differently when running in "GDB mode". There is other things that makes inkscape to crash, so therefore I cannot run the test properly. If I remember right, in "GDB mode", Inkscape crashed before I got imported the graphic file.

I managed to dig up another crash log in windows, and attached it. I found it in folder:
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\WER\ReportArchive\AppCrash_inkscape.exe_ccd37e6ba0af6e8cd8c6501169b58318ddbf86_0e6c4020\Report.wer

The .wer file seems to be created when I runned version r10898 some days ago. But there is no different in behaviour between different versions regarding this spesific error.

I have now digged up as much info and regarding this bug as I can. I really would like to help you to get rid of that bug.

To do even more, I will translate some of the most important words from the log, since the messages test is localised to the norwegian version.
Tidsstempel for program = Program timestamp
Navn på feilmodul = name of error module
Feilmodulversjon = ? (probably some thing like "name of the bad module")
Unntakskode = exception code
Unntaksforskyvning = ? (exception displacement)
ID for nasjonal innstilling = ID for localized settings (hard to translate that)
Tilleggsinformasjon = additional information
har sluttet å virke = has stopped working
Windows kan søke på Internett etter en løsning på problemet = Windows can search the web for a solution to the problem
Se etter en løsning på Internett, og lukk programmet = Look for a solution on web and close the program
senere = later
Lukk programmet = close the program
Sluttet å virke = stopped working

Hope that you guys are able to address the problem. I suspect that this concerns all norwegian w7 computers that is part of a domain.

Hi.

I'm sorry to say that this bug still persists. Now tested on Inkscape version r11593 - downloaded from
"https://skydrive.live.com/?cid=09706d11303fa52a&resid=9706D11303FA52A!217&id=9706D11303FA52A!217"

Now I have tested this version on three different W7 computers. On all three computers, Inkscape crashed when trying to save a file that contains a link to a graphic file (png, jpg, gif etc.).
All three computers is member of the same domain.

The third computer hav only one small difference in setup compared to the other two. The user I log into was a member of another group in Active Directory (in the company's network).

The bug is a real blocker - cannot use the program as intended :(

Have to be honest and say that it bothers me that nobody else have reported about this.

Have news about this bug now.

Still testing new develop versions from time to time, I was very supprised that I could NOT reproduce the bug with Inkscape 0.48+devel r12010.
However, I'd time to only test this three times (on three different graphics files) so I cannot say for sure that the bug is actually not htere any more.

One more thing that may be very important.
The day before I tested this, Windows did some upgrades. And since this bug most probably occurs on computers that have a particular setup (domain name, user name consist of a dot, OS language is norwegian etc) I beleive that one or more of the following MS patches may be the reason why Inkscape suddenly seems to behave correctly:
* KB2779030
* KB2770660
* KB2761465
* KB2758857
* KB2753842

I'll continue to test on this bug during next week and I'll wrote here if I manage to recreate the bug.
