Bug Description

Crashed while trying to update. I've also been getting apt-xapian-index crashes since running sudo update-apt-xapian-index trying to fix the problem of Synaptic's quick search box not working. (packages are filtered out even when typing their exact name into the quick search box, even though they can be found by scrolling through the list alphabetically).

I believe I'm seeing the same issue: ubuntu 10.04 64bit

Synaptic will consistently crash immediately after I type the second letter in the quick search box. Started synaptic from the command line to get some more info - nothing is output - it just dies.

Interestingly I recently upgraded recoll (which relies on xapian as well) and saw strange issues with indexing - so I had to go back to an older version. I had to upgrade xapian in the process so perhaps this is related - I can't seem to be able to downgrade xapian.
