Dash: file search & open with gedit only works every other time

When searching & clicking on a file to open (default of gedit), gedit only opens on every other attempt.
Attempt 1 fails, attempt 2 succeeds, 3 fails, 4 succeeds, ect.

The exception here is that if gedit is already open then all attempts succeed
Seems so odd that maybe a new install is in order even though this one is only 2 days old
