As a council we decided that Transmission was unneeded in the default install.

WHY?

Avi Romanoff (aroman) wrote :

Basically for two reasons:

1. It doesn't fit in with the rest of the elementary apps, and it uses GTK2. Wherever possible, we're trying to keep the interface consistent and adherent to the elementary HIG.

2. Most users who torrent will know how and where to download their favorite client. It's not like we're banning torrent clients, we're just not choosing for our users.

Additionally it's one less application to have to support.

Actually, Transmission compiles cleanly and runs on GTK3 now. https://trac.transmissionbt.com/ticket/4320
And Transmission is obviously the best choice for elementary desktop.

Like Avi said, we really don't need a torrent client in the default install. It's just one more app hanging around that most people won't touch.

Yes, I agree with that; the only purpose of having a bittorrent client by default is handling torrent downloads more or less transparently, without people having to google for "how to open .torrent" first. Including the client by default is not a proper solution to this problem.

Solution 1: make a download client that supports torrents, metalinks, szync and whatnot
Solution 2: create a handler for unknown mimetypes that searches a database of .desktop entries in packages and shows a list of apps that can open this mime type to the user. I think I'll register a blueprint about that.

Yea I agree that ideally we'd have a (possibly packagekit) solution to find apps to open *any* unknown mimetype.

As long as it is in a repo or some other source for easy download and
install, excluding the torrent program is good.

I suppose I should mark this blueprint as superseded then? :P https://blueprints.launchpad.net/elementaryos/+spec/p2p-client

I don't think p2p client is a good idea. I guess we want a unified download client. So, yes.

Well, we have no decision-making process, but this one is pretty obvious at least.
