Yes, it is likely to be an Gnu Emacs bug. "smtpmail" is part of Gnu Emacs.
Please try backing up to an older version of Emacs.

it does work with an older version. I'll wait a bit, and if it
remains a problem will send a bug report. I was wondering if this was
an intentional change they made.

hi Uday, thanks. I think this was due to a change in gnu emacs in
which they stopped supporting some old way of doing smtp
authentication. when I switched to using .authinfo.gpg, this problem
went away. cheers... Eli
