Bug Description

Binary package hint: virtualbox-ose

On May 166 there was release of VBox 4.0.8 with VERY IMPORTANT fix for Ubuntu users:

3D support: fixed GNOME 3 rendering under Ubuntu 11.04 and Fedora 15

Please provide packages on PPA or links for DEB as soon as possible.

This bug is tagged needs-packaging which identifies it as a request for a new package in Ubuntu. As a part of the managing needs-packaging bug reports specification, https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/Specs/NeedsPackagingBugs, all needs-packaging bug reports have Wishlist importance. Subsequently, I'm setting this bug's status to Wishlist.

summary: - VirtualBox 4.0.8 not jet built for Natty
+ [needs-packaging] VirtualBox 4.0.8 not jet built for Natty
Changed in virtualbox-ose (Ubuntu):
importance: Undecided → Wishlist

I'm sure this can be fixed in natty without upgrading the whole VirtualBox version.
Have you actually verified that the rendering is broken?

http://www.virtualbox.org/changeset/37104 and http://www.virtualbox.org/changeset/37105 were the two relevant changesets that I am aware of (they are packaging fixes, but there may have been actual code fixes too that I missed.) 4.0.8 is supposed to contain nothing butcherry picked bug fixes over 4.0.6 (I suppose sometimes we stretch the term "bug fix" a bit) but I don't know what Ubuntu policy is for that sort of update in a released distribution version.

The policy for stable releases is that bugs should be fixed with a minimal patch.
Generally new upstream releases are not allowed unless they only fix a specific set of bugs reported against the package.

I can prepare a package with these changes but I need someone who is willing to test if it fixes the issue.

Possible workaround:

Install / Update VirtualBox OSE 4.0.4 using this PPA: ://launchpad.net/~jacob/+archive/virt
