Bug Description

well there are a couple of problems with the compiz desktop zoom plugin and unity.

while the plugin its on by default, the hotkey was set to none. So i assigned a new hotkey: ctrl+alt+mouselwheel (or mousebutton4 and5)

The problems i immediately noticed were:

1- feels sluggish compared to 10.10 (moving mouse sideways to view content). This makes it almost unusable for me (and makers of screencasts). It has many settings, so it might be incorrectly configured by default unlike 10.10.

2- is inconsistent: unity panel and/or launcher are not zoomable and always show on screen; only the normal gnome parts zoom correctly. This is very annoying but is not as urgent as the slowness.

Am visually impaired and use enhanced zoom everyday in 10.10, so i hope this plugin gets some love for natty :)

And apart from the visually impaired, lets not forget makers of screencasts, use this in their ubuntu tutorials.

This should have some sort of default configuration. One of the most useful Compiz features, many older people seem to like it. In Unity I've bind this to <Alt><Super>Button4 and <Alt><Super>Button5 (mouse scroll).

#2 I don't know what you mean by correctly. See attached screenshot for what happens with Unity's top panel when using higher zoom levels.

This is with ATI 5770 and fglrx.

@Jiri Grönroos

thanks for the pic

however i fail to see how this is a duplicate of that bug.

there are 2 bugs mentioned here that affect ezoom:

1- laggy when moving mouse sideways. Used to be smooth in 10.10

2- unity panel and launcher do not zoom with the desktop or apps, as you posted in the pic.

maybe a third bug would be not having any hotkeys by default.

but for me this is one big bug: no love for ezoom (specially when things worked fine before) ;/

@manny

I created bug 762693 and bug 762247 and bug 762699. Could you confirm, please?

Default hotkey for Ezoom should probably be filed as a separate bug. Bug 684925 probably isn't enough.
