Bug Description

There seems to be a badblock on my hard drive and I can't seem to fix it. This is kinda a Ubuntu but because it is causing problems.

I was having some major problems with crashes, where everything stoped working and the only fix was to shut down, wait, restart the system. Well after some investigation I realized that my hard drive was going into some read only mode to save itself.

I found the data that was causing the problems (accessing it was causing the crash) thankfully I was able to back it up and trash it. But now it is stuck in my trash and I dont know if there is anymore. Even in signle user mode I have been unable to remove it, instead I get some errors (sorry did not write them down at the time but was something like input/output error--even when just listing the folder or parent folder), and emptying the trash only causes the crash. I have been looking around for a utility that could scan my hard drive and fix it but I have not found one yet.

I know that your first responce will be to back everything up and reformat, but what is the fun of that. If I wanted that I would be using windoze wouldn't I?

So I am wondering if someone could help me investigate deeper or know of a utility that would help.

I have tried everything I can think of and I think I am a resourceful person. So any help would be much appriciated.

This sounds more like a support request than a bug report. Looks like your hard drive is closed to death :-(.
Try support and if you found evidence of a bug come here with more informations.
Oh, and try to unmount your partition (or run a live CD if it is on /) and run xfs_repair on it.
