Bug Description

Binary package hint: xorg

Whenever I plug my laptop into an external monitor (VGA cable) the display on the external monitor looks very blurry. What should be straight lines seem to be constantly 'dancing'. Under Windows 7 on the same machine it works fine. It doesn't matter whether the external monitor is mirroring or acting as a secondary display, still fuzzy.

The laptop comes with nvidia optimus (hybrid nvidia/intel) but I've disabled the nvidia chip in the BIOS settings, so I'm pretty sure this should be an intel driver issue. I've tried different VGA cables, but they don't make any difference either. I also tried upgrading to the git intel drivers from this repo but they have the same problem.

I tried checking /etc/X11/xorg.conf, but it doesn't appear to exist in Maverick. I also went into the display settings and saw that it said the monitor refresh rate was 60hz and 1980x1020 resolution, just like it should.

There were a few kernel updates so I tried again under Maverick, but still blurry.

I bought a Display Port -> VGA adapter, so now the layout is:

Laptop Display Port -> Display Port to VGA convert -> KVM switch -> monitor

And there's no blurriness. So it's definitely something specific to using the VGA output.

I've got the same issues with kernel 2.6.35-28-generic and a Thinkpad T410s with only an intel card. Output via DisplayPort to HDMI or DVI is stable. I've checked multiple VGA cables, monitors and projectors.

Just to note: they didn't actually fix it in Debian. They just closed the bug because the original reported hadn't replied in awhile.

Well, the bug perhaps should go upstream to bugs.freedesktop.org rather than Debian anyway. Probably ought to test natty before doing that though.

Hey Joseph,

Thanks for your interest in Ubuntu.

Thanks for testing maverick during its development period. Unfortunately it looks like this bug report didn't get attention during the maverick development period. But I see there's not been more comments on the bug since the release, which makes me wonder if this is still an issue for you?

If you've not seen this issue since maverick's release yourself, it may have been solved by kernel or X or other updates that occurred late in the release; if so, would you mind please closing the bug for us? Go to the URL mentioned in this bug report, click the yellow icon(s) in the status column and set to 'Fix Released'.

If you no longer have the hardware needed to reproduce the problem, or otherwise feel the bug no longer needs tracked in Launchpad, you can set the status to 'Invalid'.

If you are the original reporter and still have this issue, just reply to this email saying so. (Or set the bug status to Confirmed.) If you are able to re-test this against 11.04 Natty Narwhal (our current development focus) and find the issue still affects Natty, please also run 'apport-collect <bug-number>' while running natty, which will add fresh logs and debug data, and flag it for the Ubuntu-X development team to look at.

I will test with Natty once the official final ISOs are released and report back, thanks.

I have the same problem on mine. If Joseph reports good luck, then I will
test it also. -- Kathi
