Bug Description
The extensions folder for PPL contains a PPL folder with the database access layer.
Currently contacts.php is a standalone class that does not interface with this layer. Consequently the class contains db queries for which methods have already been written.
Suggest writing a new class ppl_contacts.php that uses the relevant PPL classes to access the database, then switching the Merge widget to use this new class.
