Binary package hint: gnome-applets
in ubuntu 10.10 clean install when cpu frequency applet is added to panel it shows only graphics, but no text
when i change default theme to something else text appears correctly.

The text is there, the problem is that it is the same colour as the panel and as such it is so faint that it appears invisible.
By the way this only happens with the default theme (Ambiance), all other pre-installed themes work correctly.
