Bug Description

A dictionary lookup plugin would be very cool, which automatically shows translations into selected languages.

Yes, that would indeed be cool. I worked on that some time ago but we first need some changes to the plugin API. This is a special type of search because it each just has one result.

You can take a look at the branch I linked.

My gnome-dictionary is not working so I can't check how does it look and what it really does but... Why not use something like dictionary.com's API? I've found this link - http://developer.dictionary.com/. This could possibly give you a chance to list more than one result thus making this plugin more Cardapio like.

BTW. LibertyZero probably wants something more like translator than a dictionary - that's a really nice idea for another plugin while we're at it.

I took a look at the plugin and I agree with Paweł, relying on gnome-dictionary is not the best idea because a lot of people (including myself) have problems with it. I tried to set up up a local dictd server since the online one doesn't work but hadn't any luck so far. A dictionary.com plugin looks interesting and is definitely worth further investigation but relying on Internet access isn't always the best thing to do. Eventually we could use the dictd-dictionaries installed through the repositories directly but that would probably need a lot of work unless there is some easy to use python api available...
Oh, and I definitely want a simple translator as well :-)

Also - the gnome-dictionary will be dropped in Ubuntu 11.04.

Pawel: True, so the dictionary-plugin is obsolete. I must say I rarely ever use a dictionary anyway, translation is so much more useful.

A problem is that we would need some kind of plugin settings there to define the standard language that is translated to. But as a start, it could just take the system default language so it will work only one way.

Actually, english dictionary would be pretty cool - mostly for people living outside of English speaking countries. I for one use a dictionary (namely dictionary.com) quite often. I'm going to open another bug about this.
