Bug Description

I`ve installed Unity on my fresh 10.10 RC Desktop

sudo apt-get install unity

So when I try to change Desktop edition to Netbook in the login menu, I just see a black screen with a cursor. And hear a login sound.

On the previous version (August, 10.10 Alpha 3) I had a blinking white screen.

Thanks for your bug report and help to make ubuntu better.
As described in the technical overview (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MaverickMeerkat/TechnicalOverview) we have some issues with the ATI cards in particular, tagging as it.

You can find on this page a link to a list of supported and known to work hardware btw.

Affected too, although I'm getting the background, the mouse and the ability to blindly click around and launch the corresponding applications. Fortunately, logout menu is up right :)

After using Unity essentially problem-free for three days (I did have to update to current NVidia driver) I am getting this blank screen with movable cursor also.

I am testing/using Unity (from ppa) on a desktop install of 10.10 with Nvidia-current drivers.

CPU: AMD Athlon-64 3000+
Graphics: Nvidia 7600 GT

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation G73 [GeForce 7600 GT] (rev a1)

Given that Unity is set to become the main GUI in 11.04, surely Canonical don't expect everyone to have one graphics processor from that narrow list of graphics hardware.

BTW, I mentioned this in another bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity/+bug/595723 but I think this one more accurately describes the problem.

Hi, with natty's alpha 1 release around the corner, could you please test Unity 3.x on natty to see if this is still an issue. We've been working hard to lower the gl requirements and hope this this means you'll get a smoother experience now. Marking as incomplete pending your test results.
