Bug Description

Binary package hint: geany

I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 with Geany 0.19 installed.

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Open nautilus
2. Connect to a sftp server
3. Edit a remote file using Geany
4. Save the file

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
The file should be saved, but it was emptied!!! It's too dangerous!

Please help me, thanks.

If you want more informations, tell me.

Thanks again.

Hi
I opened ~/.config/geany/geany.conf and changed use_safe_file_saving from FALSE to TRUE, after that the remote saving worked.

@yan: Thanks a lot! This workaround really works.

Hello, I confirm this critical bug. I don't know if the problem itself come from geany or not.
In fact, when you save your file, you can't tell that's the file was emptied because the whole content is still displayed in geany. But if you close it and reopend it, you will see that the content is lost.

The workaround by yan is working for me too.

Here same problem. Workaround from Yan solves the problem.
But the average user should not need such a workaround.

Also this issue affects netbeans and komodo, probably some other ide too. There must be a bug in gvfs-ftp.

For Geany, please note that while using the use_safe_file_saving the permissions on files are reset to default.

This issue affects Eclipse-based IDE's as well.

I logged a bug in gnome-vfs about it... https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-vfs/+bug/658069
(not sure if that was the right place for it or not)

I have the same problem with Ubuntu 10.10 and Geany 0.19. It appeared when I upgraded Ubuntu from 10.04 to 10.10

also affects SciTE, http://www.scintilla.org/SciTE.html -- workaround for scite is to set "save.deletes.first=1" in the options file. this has the drawback of resetting file permissions on the target (locally modified files too)

imo, highly critical bug, it seems like this feature is core to the day-to-day workflow of many people, including myself. was working happily until upgrade to 10.10

I've marked this as a duplicate of the bug I reported (#658069), which is assigned to the GVFS package - which is where the bug is (I believe).

Changed in geany (Ubuntu):
