dvd / cd drives not handled correctly in 10.04 LTS

Bug Description

Hi,

I have two optical drives in my system, a Samsung DVD burner attached to the PATA adapter and a Plextor CD burner attached to a SCSI adapter card. Both drives give me problems under the Ubuntu 10.04 LTS release (installed first on my PC) and under the Xubuntu 10.04 LTS release (installed now). Both drives on the other hand function perfectly under SUSE 11.0, which I fortunately still have on another partition on my hard disk.

The problem is the following: When I insert a disk into the DVD burner, it is not automatically recognized and mounted by the system. It doesn't show up under the Places menu, and also not in the file system category of the thunar file browser.
The only way I can get to see and mount it, is with the disk utility (see attached screenshot).

The CD burner also behaves strange. After adding the lines:

/dev/sr0 /media/dvdrw iso9660,udf user,auto,exec,utf8 0 0
/dev/sr1 /media/cdrw iso9660,udf user,auto,exec,utf8 0 0

to /etc/fstab, it at least now automatically mounts written CDs and displays them on the desktop, but when I insert a blank
CD, it is displayed in the disk utility as a 2.2 TB volume, which brasero doesn't want to write to ... (also see screenshot)

When I check /var/log/kern.log, I see lots of error messages:

I'm not expert enough to diagnose from these messages where the problem lies, so any suggestions would be welcome !

Similar stuff here. Fresh instal of 10.04LTS. odd handling of DVDs . I get this message in dmesg on each burned DVD that works fine in other OSes and in a player: "end_request: I/O error, dev sr1, sector 9147640". I have anotehr DVD that plays fine, but when I try to rip it to disk, it hangs and drags the computer down horribly. Very frustrating. No problems in 9.10...

It happens on a fresh, new installation of Kubuntu 10.04 amd64. All currently available updates are installed.
The error messages appears 1 or 2 minutes after a fresh boot. After many of this error messages (dmesg) both drives dissappears from the system. K3b cannot find any optical device anymore.

If I start burning an CD ISO image immidiately after booting, this job might be finished correctly. If start burning to late ... burning fails because the DVD burner got lost during burning.

I installed 10.04 on a new, empty hard disc. The previous Ubuntu installation on another disc had no problems, everything was fine including CD read and DVD burning. Because the previous system was an rather old system with a few dist-upgrades over the years I deceided to do a frest installation to get all new features.

Hardware:
Asus mainboard P5N32 E with Nvidia chipset (C55+MCP55P; a.k.a. nForce®650i SLI & nForce®570 SLI)
Intel CPU Q6600
8 GB RAM

Installed kernel: 2.6.32-22-generic

I concur with the other users.

Ubuntu 10.04 LTS has serious compatibility problems using DVDs that are burned by Vista's internal burner.
I doubt that Windows 7 would accommodate Ubuntu by using compatible DVD standards.

It gets worse: a DVD burned by Roxio Creator DE 10.2 is also not readable by Ubuntu 10.04.

I have wasted 5 DVD+R disks to try to get even one format to be readable on Ubuntu 10.04.

However, fortunately Ubuntu does read and play DVD movies (I played Fantastic4, II). Ubuntu calls the format simply as UDF.

There are problems with with the lower UDF format (version 1.02) that was to be compatible with older OSs.
The newer UDF formats did not seem to work either. (UDF 2.00, 2.5, 2.6) I cannot completely substantiate this,
because Ubuntu will not tell me what version of UDF format is on any DVD. It calls the ones that work UDF.
It is Strange that Ubuntu can read the Windows Vista OS Setup disk (it calls it UDF), but cannot read the ones burned on Vista, format version does not seem to matter.

As long as Windows is used by billions of users, Ubuntu must be compatible with it!

Speaking of CD/DVD compatibility, the fact that Linux and Ubuntu do not use drive letter mounting, nor seem to have even attempted such, but Windows does, is already a big blow to Ubuntu.
You see, in Windows, I can create virtual CDs and DVDs, and the programs will run without an actual CD/DVD Drive.
Without drive letters in Ubuntu these Cds/DVDs will not work, nor do virtual disk drives work, not even with wine. - I had 15 CDs/DVDs mounted at all times, and they would mount automatically at bootup.
Now with Ubuntu 10.04, I cannot use my $1000s of Windows disk programs, - but now I cannot even read Windows created DVDs.
I am forced to re-installed Windows Vista to make this work, unless the Ubuntu masters can see the necessity
of being compatible in these very important OS issues, and have the will to quickly find a solution, especially since this version of Ubuntu is an LTS.

I really love Ubuntu, and many of us hope that it will usurp Windows 7 in the near future.

If I broke Launchpad protocol again, I apologize. (and I do not believe in karma, but I believe that humans can work together, to accomplish something good and useful, such as Ubuntu 10.04 LTS)

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 577465

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. I have the exact same problem as Thomas, above.

A few minutes after booting, the CD/DVD drive disappears, never to return, with the exact same type of errors:

and ad nausem, then the drive is gone. Aftwards, drive utility still shows it as being there, but refuses to acknowledge that there's media in the drive (see screenshot)

wodim --devices returns nothing
lshw -short doesn't show the CD/DVD burner.

Mine is also a TSSCorp drive.

This started happening after upgrading to 10.04 LTS, no problems on prior 9.0x versions.

I am still relatively new to Ubuntu/linux, and will gladly run any traces/reports if told what to run. Unfortunately I am not in a position to upgrade to the development release.
