Bug Description
when I try to open a figure created with matlab and saved as an adobe illustrator file (matlab doesn't tell you with generation of AI), I simply get an error: Failed to load the requested file.
When I open the file using Adobe Illustrator one gets a version warning (this is a well know behaviour) but the figure opens all right.
Further when I save the same file via Adobe Illustrator I can then load it into Inkscape.
I know this probably suggests that matlab screws the file rather than Inkscape fails to import a proper .ai file.
Trouble is, I want to get rid of Adobe, .ai is the only vector graphic file matlab can write.
Maybe it is an easy fix, I am happy to provide example files.

Confirmed on Windows XP, Inkscape bzr rev. 9315.
Actually, Inkscape can import it, but since the .ai format version used by your Matlab version is 8 (or bellow), you need to select a specific import filter in the open/import dialog format list. By default, Inkscape tries to open your file with a 9 (or above) AI filter, and thus fails.
