Binary package hint: unattended-upgrades

This is a whishlist item that would simplify the release upgrade process a bit.

If I have modified the file /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/50unattended-upgrades to specify my email address under Unattended-Upgrade::Mail on each release upgrade I will be prompted to know if I want to use my old file or the one provided by the maintainer.

Since this file also contains Unattended-Upgrade::Allowed-Origins which is release specific, it is not a good idea to reply no to this question, but this means that I'll need to go put back my email into it later on.

A possible way around that would be to separate user modifiable settings from the release specific settings in this file.

Isn't it conventional to forward all mail addressed to system users to some real user? The default u-u config could just send mail to "root", and then the system MTA can be configured to forward that accordingly. So the same person who gets spammed about failed cron jobs et al. gets u-u upgrade messages as well.

Starting with 1.4 unattended-upgrades recommends overriding default configuration values in separate files in /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/.

From README.md:
...
To override the configuration it is recommended to create an other APT configuration file fragment which overrides the shipped default value because updates to to shipped configuration file may conflict with the local changes blocking updating unattended-upgrades itself. The new file should sort later than 50unattended-upgrades to be parsed later than the one shipping the default values, it can be e.g. 52unattended-upgrades-local.
