Binary package hint: unattended-upgrades
This is a whishlist item that would simplify the release upgrade process a bit.
If I have modified the file /etc/apt/
Since this file also contains Unattended-
A possible way around that would be to separate user modifiable settings from the release specific settings in this file.

Isn't it conventional to forward all mail addressed to system users to some real user? The default u-u config could just send mail to "root", and then the system MTA can be configured to forward that accordingly. So the same person who gets spammed about failed cron jobs et al. gets u-u upgrade messages as well.
