Bug Description

10.04 installer wont install grub
grub complains about missing map while installing 10.04

workaround
issuing grub-mk-devicemap and reinstall grub manual

PS: I had a complicated dev/sda setup at this time:

hd0/part1 win ntfs
hd0/part2 and3 empty (was another distro)
hd0/part3 ext
hd0/part4 windows userdata ntfs
hd0/part5 linux /
hd0/part6 swap

(created by automatical partitionig by the installer)

Can confirm this bug for 10.04 Alternate install on Logical Volume. It's a grub-installer error.

If you "chroot" into /target directory and run grub-mkdevicemap you can go back to the grub installer, restart grub installation and the installer will finish correctly. Without the device.map the installer does fail.

The syslog is attached.

I think this was fixed as bug 527210, by bind-mounting /proc and /sys into /target during installation (the symptoms will have varied slightly depending on the type of device being installed to, though). It shouldn't be a problem nowadays.
