Bug Description

Hi, I recently purchase a Benq laptop (joybook S57B) and I experience trouble with the high temperature of the cpu : the bios turn off the machine to prevent CPU overheating. I'm currently running kernel 2.6.32.10-generic which comes with lucid alpha2 (january-14). sensors-detect do not detects the cpu's fan.
The cooling cpu fan seems do not work at all when the kernel boot, and that happened with all debian-like distro i tried (karmic, lenny, debian testing, knoppix). However i'd say that when i turn off the laptop the ubuntu logo remain on the screen (which is another bug i guess linked with this alpha release) and suddenly the fan is working...

WORKAROUND:
sudo gedit /etc/default/grub

And then edit the line:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"

into:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi.power_nocheck=1"

After that, just update your grub:
sudo update-grub

Reboot.

Hi patoncito1,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 508674

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

Hi There !!
It seems that the problem still has not been fixed.
Waiting for an kernel upgrade or a patch??? i'm using a slackawe-based
distrib, the only one who can recognize that fan.
I hope we will soon have an answer from the person in change of that case. I
already submit in order to provide him further information about the
hardware pb.
I regularly tried the ubuntu/debian unstable release to test if it works
good. I'll post on that forum if it can turn...
Sincerely,
Raphael

Hi!

I'm the owner of a brazilian rebranded Benq S57. We have the same problem around, but as far as I could check, it's a problem in the bios. I'm not sure BenQ has a new bios for that (in Brazil nobody tried the BenQ Bios, since the first guy ever to try it used the wrong program and lost his motherboard... ok, that was probably the program's fault, not the bios, but can you convince someone else to test in such a situation? ;) ).

Anyway, I could solve my problems appending the option during boot time (after you edit your grub configuration, for some reason I'm not aware, you must first **turn off** your system and then start it again will probably go fine. A simple restart *does not* work, ok?):

acpi.power_nocheck=1

This can be done by

sudo gedit /etc/default/grub

And then edit the line:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"

into:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi.power_nocheck=1"

After that, just update your grub:

sudo update-grub2

(or is it just update-grub?) and turn off your system. The next power on, your cooler will be working fine, I guess.

Sincerely,

Ricardo

Hi Ricardo,

I'm so happy to get a constructive answer on that problem.
So i fix it with your help changing that value in the grub file.
Now it works very well. I guess other people also can fix that issue.
About the bios, no new version for the S57 model.
Many thanks for your help and let's keep in touch.

Thanks for your solution but...
Can you explain me how to do your trick step by step?
I'm totally newbie in Linux and I hope you can tell me the step.
Thanks before. :-)
